Sustainable Salons: How the Salon Industry is Leading the Charge in Sustainability

We’re constantly wowed by businesses making efforts to turn their waste into something more productive and sustainable for our environment. A shift that we have been following and loving is the rise in sustainable salons in Australia and all around the world. As the name suggests, sustainable salons are beauty salons that repurpose most of their used resources in order to cut back on landfill. Sustainable Salons are a social enterprise that rescue up to 95% of salon resources from landfill, including those from hair, beauty dermal, barbers and pet groomers - finding repurposing solutions that benefit our planet, all while supporting the community!

Not only are sustainable salons better for our environment - they also let business owners be more creative and efficient with how operations are run day-to-day. Sounds legit. But what can your salon do to make a positive and sustainable impact? We’ve shortlisted some big changes you can make and exactly how you can achieve them;

Save the ocean

Rather than binning your trim when you get the chop, hair clippings can be made into what’s known as a ‘hair boom.’ These nifty creations serve as an effective absorbent for oil and can actually help clean oil spills along the Australian coast, according to ABC news. Now not only can you leave a sustainable salon with those fresh ‘do feels, you can also leave knowing you’ve made a lasting positive impact on marine ecosystems and their sealife. Amen!

Donate your pony

If you’ve got the grits to commit to the choppy bob (our hat goes off to you!) - your luscious locks can be used to create wigs for those with hair-loss conditions such as Alopecia and cancer. Sustainable Salons have collected a massive 44000 ponytails since they started their ponytail donation program in 2015. That’s a whole lot of hair saved from landfill - and a tonne of lovely wigs for those in need. Don’t let your next chop go to waste when you have the incredible power to improve the life of someone who’s going through something they didn’t ask for. Find out how to donate your pony here

Recycle

When you think about it, it’s easy to see that there’s oodles of waste produced in salons, filling the skip bin each week. Think of all of those foils! Sustainable Salons collect and repurpose hair, paper, metals including aluminium foil, chemicals, razors and hairdressing tools from salons around the country. Diverting a salon’s waste from landfill and back into recycled resources is definitely something we can get behind. In fact, over 800 salons have already joined the Sustainable Salons movement, including our lovely client Peachy Skin Clinic - who specialise in skin revision, beauty treatments and permanent hair removal!

Give to those in need

While Sustainable Salons mainly focus on the beauty industry, that doesn’t mean that they can’t make a difference in other ways. One way of giving back is funding for goods and services that are high in demand yet low in accessibility for marginalised communities. OzHarvest, a food rescue organisation based in Australia, credits Sustainable Salons for their contributions in helping provide free meals to the homeless community. So far, the program has provided 95,200 meals through their partnership with OzHarvest, according to an article by 1millionwomen. Successful partnerships like the one with OzHarvest prove that sustainable salons are providing forward-thinking solutions to benefit the global community. When you choose to visit a sustainable salon, you can feel good knowing you are not only helping the planet, but supporting the homeless too!

It’s so encouraging to see sustainable salons on the rise as businesses become more socially responsible for their actions. If you’re a sustainable salon, we would love to hear from you! How have you gone waste-free in your industry? What are some solutions that you’ve implemented as a sustainable salon?
